The 4th was a great day, with sun, food, drink, and work. The whole group came over with the notion that mama nature may decide to let it out on us. It was hazy and gray for most of the day, but that didn’t deter Bryan and I from making the first lake entry of the summer. It was cold and a little bit green, but it had to be done. We had been attempting to dig up a log/tree that floated up on the beach a few years ago. Since then, the weather and the water have buried it. I would say it is 2 feet in diameter and 18 feet long. I was laughed at when I grabbed the shovels to dig it up and get it out. I’ve wanted to get that thing out of the ground since last year and I figured now would be a good time. If we could dig it out, there were enough people there to help us get it out. We dug it out halfway. We had a group try and lift it. Lift it, no. Move it, yes. We nudged it a bit, but it was way too huge. We came to the conclusion that we need to cut it in half. So we re-buried it to avoid people falling in the hole, opened a beer, and hit the lake water.

The day continued with cheese dip and waiting for the night to come. The kids loved the water and the sand. We loved watching them love it.

We had our customary dinner of burgers and hot dogs, Mr. Chenette’s potato and mac salad, and mom’s salad. Dinner came and went and it was time for the fires. This is the best time of the day. The night settles in and everyone on the beach lights their fire. If our lake was smaller, you could see the ring of fire. Since it’s 48 miles in diameter, you can only see down the beach. Fires ranged in size and building, but all of them lit together makes it beautiful. Because I was my dog for a while, I didn’t enjoy it as much at first. I didn’t even want to light the fire, which is rare for me. I wanted to be inside. The boomers were plentiful this year. More than any year that I can remember.

After a while, either I got accustomed to it, or the beer took over, so I made my way outside. My time was short-lived though. Mother Nature decided to end 4th of July early this year. The skies dropped it on us pretty good and sent everyone inside. I am sad to say I was ready for bed by midnight. That doesn’t happen on the 4th.

Today we got up and hit the beach. It was fun to watch Hope around the water. The two houses were together and we enjoyed the nice morning. These kids are so much fun. My parents are having a blast with them. I think it is hard for them to have them for only so short of a time. Memphis is a long way away. A couple of weeks a year is hard to build the bond you want to have with your grandkids or nieces. Something to think about, but life and space play more of a role than our desires.

Time to get ready for pizza and wings and the end of Last Samurai.
