MTV
I’m not a parent and don’t know anything about raising kids, especially girls, but recently I’ve been exposed to what seems to be a song with a good message. I am not a Top 40 guy, but when I eat lunch at home I usually sit in front of the TV. When it’s 2 AM and I can’t sleep, I sit in front of the TV. The cable box eventually sees what is on MTV Hits. Also, I’m old school in some of my technology. My Walkman, yes, that thing which plays tapes, is broken. I don’t have an MP3 player yet. When I work out, I plug into the Y’s radio system. The Hit List is scanned to.
I’ve listened to and seen the video for Pink’s Stupid Girls. From what I understand, this song talks about the pressure for girls to act like the image TV portrays. Pink says a few things that make sense:
“What happened to the dreams of a girl president
She’s dancing in the video next to 50 Cent…”
“I’m so glad that I’ll never fit in
That will never be me
Outcasts and girls with ambition
That’s what I wanna see
Disasters all around
World despaired
Their only concern
Will they **** up my hair…”
“I don’t wanna be a stupid girl.”
I am not the voice of girl power by any means, but if I had a daughter, I would want her to listen to the clean version of this song. I would want her to see the video and read the lyrics. I would want her to live how she wants, not how others expect.
Got to go, a 50 Cent video is on…
