Biddeford, ME

5:04 PM

I left the comforts of the water, family, and the sailboat and am now in Biddeford, ME, which is 20 miles south of Portland. Plans changed slightly. I met Sean and Mike here today. We’re headed to Acadia tomorrow to camp. Sean has a friend, Maureen, who we are staying with. She is a med student at Univ. of New England. As I lean to my right I can see Saco Bay, which leads to the ocean. It’s a weird thing how the tides work here. Earlier we were on the beach. There is an island straight ahead that in a few hours will not be an island. The water rises and falls that much. There is a place called Biddeford Pool that is the same thing. Boats come in and then at other times there is no water in it at all.

I ended up staying another night on the boat. After some boat issues which turned out not to be, we ended up in Gloucester. They filmed A Perfect Storm there. I could see the setting with all of the fishing boats and fishermen. This is a true coastal town. From the boat we could here the fisheries churning out their catch. One of them was Gordon’s. If you go to your supermarket, I’ll bet you’ll find some Gordon’s frozen fish. I’m not sure if this is the same place Redman raves about during his edition of Crib’s (one of the best), but it may be.

Sean and Mike are showering as we get ready to head into Portland. I’m anxious to get some street meat and have it be lobster. There should be some fun to be had tonight. Maureen just took a couple of intense exams and she and her friends are ready to let off some steam. It’s amazing for me to be in Maine. You see it on the map and never think much about it, but it is beautiful. There is a ton of water and as I drove on I95 (the same one I drove in Miami), there was a sign to beware of moose on the highway. Awesome.

We’re heading out, so I’ll post and coast… And I still have not shaved. Also, congrats to Bob and Morgan, my hosts in Raleigh on welcoming Davis Robert to the world on Tuesday. 8lbs. 11oz. All is good. Great stuff.
