Rochester, NY

After a few days of pondering, I’m back at it full force. Last night was the topper. I got a call earlier in the week from a friend of mine from high school. He and I go back. He and I (and my parents) road tripped it to NC to look at schools. We were thinking about going somewhere together. That didn’t work out. I don’t think he wanted to head to Little Rock. But he called and asked if I wanted to play golf. Of course I did. It was he and I, another guy from my high school, and 5 others from our rival high school, along with another guy who I’d heard of often, but never met in a sober state, so I didn’t really know him. Even as all of us were in high school the rivalry thing was not that big. I ran around a lot with those guys. But there is something about the guys from your school and beating the guys from that school. I think we lost more than we won. I think.

Anyway, Jim picked me up and we headed to golf. It was a perfect afternoon for it. We were playing after work time. He picked me up at 5ish. It was around 75 and the sun was beaming with pride. We hit the course and handshakes and hugs all around. I love seeing people from back in the day. We caught up, picked teams, and hit the links. The golf was very laid back and we all had fun. Of course, most of us are high level competitive, so we still wanted to do well, especially for the skin money. It all worked out pretty close. Me and Chris took 4 skins, Gav’s chip took his team 3, and Steve’s par on 9 took them 2. After golf we hit the bar for a drink and way too many wings.

It was seeing those guys, having them be interested in my trip, telling me about a specific journal entry, telling me their wife is keeping up, and then afterwards talking to them about trying to get a book deal (I’d never voiced that before), that reaffirmed I was to go at this and go at it with a renewed vengeance.

Timing can be said for a lot of things, but I got home last night determined to make this work. I had an interview set for today and I was pumped for it. It had been a couple of weeks, but now I roll on. Thanks to those guys. They may not think about it, but hitting the golf ball last night was a big boost.

Today was great. I interviewed a friend of mine and my family. He is a couple of years older than me. His parents said he’d be a great person to interview because he loves his job. They were correct. We talked about how he got into the recruiting/placement field, why he likes it, why he’s good at it. What was even better was that we talked about a lot of other things. We talked about the economy, which he sees as getting better, we talked about travel, religion, family, friends, and a bit about me. I asked him what he would think if he saw this on a resume. I think he would be cool to it. Others maybe not.

I have two more interviews tomorrow and am working on setting some more.

I’m headed out of Rochester in 2 weeks to Columbus, OH. I am meeting up with Steve (from the Turks) for a BBQ festival and to see the Ohio State campus. He is a Buckeye all the way. I can’t wait to see that. And then, it’s off to explore the northeast. Up until then, I’ll be setting a course, trying to set interviews, and checking to see how you get a book to be published. I’m not sure if I’ve laid this out or not, but I’ve decided to write a book about all this.

Back to it.
