It is funny how certain things get at you and you place importance on attaining goals. I am as competitive as they come, sometimes to a fault, when it comes to sports. Since I’ve been in Rochester working on my writing, some of my friends have introduced me to the Texas Hold ‘Em craze. I’ve talked about it before and I’m sure you’ve seen it on ESPN, or E, or the Travel Channel.

Well, now I have an individual goal to win one of these games. I’ve come close; taking second a few times, but second isn’t good enough. Hold em is on the mind because we played last night. My buddy Joe is moving to Denver and there was a going away night out. A lot of the guys went out to dinner. I stayed home and grilled out T-Bone’s with my dad. Yum. The bars began to close and a dilemma arose. I had to decide between spending time with a certain lady or going back to Joe’s for cards.

I guess I felt the nostalgia of one last card game, so I went for the cards. She wasn’t too happy, and of course I did my best to try and explain the reasoning, but I don’t think she was buying the card thing. I’ll be calling here once I am done here.

So I am at Joe’s sitting at an 11 person hold em game. The first hand of the night I draw flush after 6 and take a good size pot. Two hands later Joe and I are set up for a one on one battle. The first five cards are clubs, and I hold the king in my hand. Joe bets, I raise, and he goes all in. Cards are flipped. The only card in the entire deck that can beat me is the ace of clubs. Joe has it. I lose the hand, but because of my first win, I am still in with the close to the same amount of chips as when I started.

Then fatigue set in. I had a busy day yesterday. I was up early, helped cut wood on the beach, then played 27 holes of golf. A perfect day to be outside, it was 65 and sunny. Then I came home, took a 45 minute Andrew, and chowed down with dad. Then off to Darcie’s for a hello and a drink, then downtown to meet up with the crew. Now it is 4 AM and I am whipped. There are only 5 left in the game. I am the low man chip wise. I get an ace and a 10 off suit. A guy who hadn’t done a thing all night went all in. I was the first up after him. I knew he had a hand. I think if I was not so tired, I would have folded and kept on. I went all in as well. He had a pair of 5′s. The flop did nothing. I lost. And the stinking drought continues. I don’t like hold em that much, but I have to win one before I end it. That is a goal. Not an exactly earth shattering, awe inspiring goal, but a goal none the less.

I came home and went to bed. I slept until noon. It seems like I hadn’t done that since college.

Another beauty of a day out there.

Oh yeah, I did not go to Toronto. I’m going next weekend.
