When winter hits, my movie watching skyrockets. In today’s (Wed) case, I made my first venture to, The Cinema, and what may be the longest continuously running movie theater in the United States, starting in 1914. You cannot beat $5 for a double feature. Or $2.50 for a large popcorn. Or $2 for a large drink (with .75 refills on both).

In this case, my date and I started off with A Good Year, starring Russell Crowe. I was into the movie because it is about a well off business man, very well off, having to decide between money and things versus love and lifestyle. I don’t know where they shot the movie, but it supposedly took place in France. And the scenery is beautiful. A lot of it takes place at a French Château filled with wine vineyards. The accents did not make all of the dialogue understandable. I’m not a critic and I don’t spoil things, so I’ll spare details, but overall I would say the movie was a winner. A decent date flick. As she pointed out afterwards, this is a movie for Crowe to try and soften his image.

After a ten minute break of mind clearing, bathroom, and leg stretching the double of the feature began. Running with Scissors follows the memoirs of a teenage boy in the 70′s. It is hard to describe, but I will say he did not have a normal life. The movie is funny and odd. It is not standard humor at all. I don’t want to ruin it, but there are some classic lines. Don’t read this sentence if you’re going to see it (If your mom brings a shrink into your home and the first thing he asks for is bologna with a side of horse radish, and then the first question he asks your mom is about her bowl movements, I’d be leery.) Anyway, it was strange but good, kind of like an American Beauty/Royal Tannenbaums mix.

I hadn’t done a double dip in a long time. Bring your attention span. It was good to focus my thoughts on something else for a while. After all of the book tweaking I’ve been doing, I need it. I’ll be back to The Cinema for sure.
