Memphis, TN

I just got back from my earliest interview to date. A 7:30 AM start worked out great. I made it to Geoff Calkins house and we conducted part one of the interview on the way to his sports radio show. Geoff is the columnist for the Memphis Commercial Appeal. I told you how I met him. It was great to see him and bring back the PGA memories. As we talked I found it fascinating that I was sitting with a Harvard grad and Harvard law grad who gave it up to pursue his passion. He epitomizes my journey. His career took off. He cautioned me that not everyone is as lucky with a mid life career change. But he also said he’s not sure where he would be if he didn’t go for it.

I am huge sports fan. I do a lot of driving. I listen to sports talk radio. It was awesome to sit in the studio and watch he and Rob Fisher go back and forth. They had a lot f guests today: A scout for the Memphis Grizzlies calling from D predraft camp in Chicago, the former voice of the Grizzlies who happens to be going to the expansion Charlotte team (Go Bobcats), an author who wrote a book abut the history of the baseball glove (doesn’t sound that interesting, but it was), a Memphis Redbirds spokesman (AAA baseball team), a so and so from Tunica county (not sure what he’s doing on the show), and then some calls. It was a two hour show and it flew by. I did not get to speak, although I almost sneezed a few times.

We concluded the interview on the drive back to his house. I am now changing from writer to hoity golfer as I get ready to go to private Colonial Country Club. Brad used to belong there and I have played it numerous times. My goal has always been top break 80 there. I’ve never done it. I am not sure why I’m even thinking about it considering I’ve played 4 times in the past 2 months. But, I will go there with that goal in mind. The true goal should be for me to enjoy the great course and the friends I’ll be playing with. Alas, I am way too competitive with myself, so I will be mad once I realize 80 is only attainable with an eagle, birdie, birdie, birdie finish.

Lunch, input of the contacts (too early this morning), and then getting my game face on. Colonial here I come.
